Persimmon Calyx (Shi Di)

Botanical Name: Diospyros kaki Thunb.
TCM Name: Shi Di
Common Name: Persimmon Calyx

Overview:
Shi Di, or persimmon calyx, refers to the dried calyx (the green, cup-like structure at the base of the fruit) of the persimmon (Diospyros kaki). In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is primarily used to direct rebellious Qi downward, especially in cases of hiccups and belching caused by stomach Qi disharmony. It is considered a gentle yet effective herb that regulates the flow of Qi in the stomach.

Botanical Characteristics:
The calyx is collected after the fruit is harvested, then cleaned and dried. It retains a slightly bitter and astringent taste, and is considered neutral in nature, affecting mainly the stomach meridian.

Traditional Uses in TCM:

  1. Stops Hiccups and Belching

    • Used for persistent or intractable hiccups and belching due to rebellious stomach Qi.

  2. Regulates Stomach Qi

    • Helps harmonize the stomach and alleviate nausea or acid reflux associated with Qi counterflow.

Pharmacological Properties:
Persimmon calyx contains tannins and other plant compounds with mild astringent and sedative effects. Some modern studies suggest it may help calm smooth muscle contractions, which supports its traditional use in reducing hiccups and digestive discomfort.

Preparation and Dosage:

  • Form: Commonly decocted alone or as part of herbal formulas.

  • Dosage: 3–6 grams per day in decoction.

Precautions:

  • Generally considered safe when used as directed.

  • Should be used under the guidance of a qualified practitioner, especially in cases of Qi deficiency or cold in the stomach.

  • Not recommended for long-term use without professional supervision.
