Clove (Ding Xiang)
Botanical Name: Syzygium aromaticum
TCM Name: Ding Xiang
Common Name: Clove

Overview:
Ding Xiang, or clove, is the dried flower bud of the Syzygium aromaticum tree. Native to Southeast Asia, it has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to warm the interior, direct rebellious Qi downward, and relieve pain. In both culinary and medicinal traditions, clove is valued for its strong aromatic qualities and potent warming effects.

Botanical Characteristics:
The clove tree is an evergreen that produces reddish-brown flower buds. These are harvested just before blooming and dried for use. Clove is rich in essential oils, particularly eugenol, which contributes to its distinctive aroma and medicinal properties.

Traditional Uses in TCM:

  1. Warms the Middle Jiao and Alleviates Pain

    • Used for stomach cold with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

  2. Directs Rebellious Qi Downward

    • Commonly used to treat hiccups, belching, and vomiting caused by cold in the stomach.

  3. Tonifies Kidney Yang and Aids in Reproductive Health

    • Sometimes used for impotence, cold extremities, or weakness due to kidney yang deficiency.

  4. Freshens Breath and Reduces Oral Discomfort

    • Chewed traditionally to relieve toothaches and eliminate bad breath.

Pharmacological Properties:
Clove contains eugenol, caryophyllene, and tannins, which have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antimicrobial, and digestive properties. Modern research supports its use in oral care, gastrointestinal discomfort relief, and as an Antioxidant.

Preparation and Dosage:

  • Form: Typically used in decoctions, powders, or tinctures.

  • Dosage: 1.5–4.5 grams per day when used in traditional formulations.

Precautions:

  • Use with caution in individuals with heat conditions or Yin deficiency.

  • Not recommended in large doses or long-term use due to its strong, pungent nature.

  • Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially during pregnancy or in combination with other warming herbs.
