Overview:
Rhubarb, known as Da Huang in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is the dried root and rhizome of several species of Rheum, primarily Rheum palmatum, Rheum officinale, or Rheum tanguticum. It has been used for centuries in TCM as a powerful purgative herb that clears internal heat, promotes bowel movements, eliminates toxins, and invigorates blood circulation. It is particularly valued for treating constipation, abdominal fullness, febrile diseases, and blood stasis syndromes.
Botanical Characteristics:
The Rheum species are robust perennial plants native to high-altitude regions of China and the Himalayas. The roots are harvested in autumn, sliced, and dried for medicinal use. The active part—its rhizome and root—is yellowish-brown in color with a bitter, pungent taste.
Traditional Uses in TCM:
Purges accumulation and relieves constipation:
Commonly used in cases of constipation due to heat or stagnation in the intestines.
Drains fire and clears heat:
Treats symptoms such as high fever, irritability, or delirium resulting from internal excess heat.
Clears heat and resolves toxicity:
Used to manage skin infections, boils, and abscesses due to toxic heat accumulation.
Invigorates blood and removes stasis:
Promotes circulation and is effective in treating amenorrhea, abdominal masses, or traumatic injury.
Clears damp-heat:
Addresses conditions such as jaundice, dysentery, and urinary discomfort caused by damp-heat.
Pharmacological Properties:
Modern pharmacological research has confirmed that rhubarb possesses laxative, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, hepatoprotective, and anti-tumor effects. Key active compounds include anthraquinones (such as emodin, rhein, and aloe-emodin), which contribute to its strong purgative and anti-inflammatory actions.
Preparation and Dosage:
Rhubarb is often processed in different ways to modify its effects:
Raw Da Huang: Strongly purgative, used for acute constipation.
Wine-processed Da Huang: Enhances blood-invigorating action.
Charred Da Huang: Used to stop bleeding.
Typical oral dosage ranges from 3–12 grams, depending on the condition and the desired therapeutic effect. It is generally taken in decoction or pill form, and always under the guidance of a qualified TCM practitioner.
Precautions:
Not suitable for individuals with weak digestion, chronic diarrhea, or during pregnancy.
Should be avoided during menstruation or postpartum unless specifically indicated.
Long-term or excessive use may lead to electrolyte imbalance or dependency.
Should not be combined in high doses with herbs like Gan Cao (Licorice), as they may counteract each other.
