Jiāng Cán (Bombyx Batryticatus / Stiff Silkworm)

Overview:
Jiāng Cán, also known as Stiff Silkworm or Bombyx Batryticatus, is a traditional medicinal material made from silkworm larvae that have been infected and killed by the fungus Beauveria bassiana. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is renowned for its ability to dispel wind, transform phlegm, and relieve spasms. Jiāng Cán is especially useful in treating convulsions, sore throat, and nodules.

Zoological Description:
Jiāng Cán is the dried body of diseased silkworms (Bombyx mori) that have been naturally infected. These silkworms are harvested, cleaned, and dried for medicinal use. It appears stiff and slightly curved, with a yellowish to grayish-white surface.

Traditional Uses in TCM:

  1. Dispels wind and relieves convulsions: Used for seizures, tetanus, facial paralysis, and childhood convulsions.

  2. Clears heat and transforms phlegm: Treats stubborn phlegm, loss of voice, and sore throat.

  3. Resolves nodules and dissipates masses: Used for scrofula, goiter, and other swellings.

  4. Expels wind-heat and benefits the throat: Effective in wind-heat type sore throat or hoarseness.
