Di Long (Lumbricus / Earthworm)

Overview:
Di Long, also known as Lumbricus or Earthworm in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is a commonly used animal-derived medicinal substance. It is prized for its ability to clear heat, calm wheezing, unblock the meridians, and promote urination. Di Long has a long history of use in treating convulsions, asthma, hypertension, and certain types of paralysis.

Zoological Description:
Di Long is derived from the dried body of the earthworm, typically Pheretima aspergillum. These earthworms are collected, cleaned, and dried before use in decoctions or powdered formulas.

Traditional Uses in TCM:

  1. Clears heat and extinguishes wind: Used in febrile diseases with convulsions, seizures, or high fever.

  2. Unblocks the channels and promotes movement: Beneficial for hemiplegia, numbness, or joint immobility due to wind-stroke or trauma.

  3. Calms wheezing and supports lung function: Treats asthma, chronic bronchitis, or cough due to lung heat.

  4. Promotes urination and clears heat from the lower burner: Used for painful or difficult urination, edema, and urinary tract infections.

Active Compounds and Pharmacology:
Di Long contains enzymes (like lumbrokinase), amino acids, and other Bioactive proteins with anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, anticoagulant, and neuroprotective effects. Modern studies support its use in improving circulation, reducing blood viscosity, and aiding in stroke recovery.

Preparation and Dosage:
Usually decocted or used in powdered extracts. Typical dosage ranges from 4–12 grams, depending on the condition and formulation.

Precautions:

  • Use with caution during pregnancy.

  • Avoid in cases of spleen deficiency with diarrhea.

  • Always consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use.
