Burdock Seed (Arctium lappa), Niu Bang Zi

Overview:
Burdock Seed, known as Niu Bang Zi in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), refers to the dried ripe fruit (commonly called seeds) of Arctium lappa, a biennial plant native to Eurasia. It is traditionally used to expel wind-heat, soothe sore throats, support skin eruptions like measles, and aid in detoxification. It is especially helpful in the early stages of colds and flu accompanied by throat inflammation or rashes.

Botanical Characteristics:
Arctium lappa, or greater burdock, is a robust herb with large leaves and purple thistle-like flowers. The fruit (technically achenes, but commonly called seeds) matures in late summer and is harvested and dried for medicinal use.

Traditional Uses in TCM:

  • Dispels wind-heat: Treats fever, sore throat, and cough caused by external wind-heat invasion.

  • Benefits the throat: Reduces swelling and pain in the throat.

  • Promotes eruption of rashes: Encourages the expression of skin eruptions during febrile diseases like measles.

  • Clears heat and relieves toxicity: Used for boils, carbuncles, and skin infections.
