Overview:
Mint, known as Bo He in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is the dried aerial part of the Mentha haplocalyx plant. It is well-known for its refreshing aroma and cooling properties. Traditionally, it is used to release the exterior, clear wind-heat, soothe the throat, and regulate Qi, especially in the context of colds, fever, headaches, and eye discomfort.

Botanical Characteristics:
Mentha haplocalyx is a species of mint native to China. It is a perennial herb with square stems, opposite leaves, and purplish flowers. The plant has a strong minty fragrance and is typically harvested in summer when the leaves are most aromatic.

Traditional Uses in TCM:

  • Releases the exterior and dispels wind-heat: Commonly used for symptoms such as sore throat, fever, headache, and cough at the early stage of a cold or flu.

  • Clears the head and eyes: Treats eye redness, dizziness, and headaches caused by wind-heat.

  • Soothes the throat and vents rashes: Helps express measles or rashes in febrile diseases.

  • Moves Liver Qi: Alleviates emotional tension, chest tightness, and irritability related to Liver Qi stagnation.

Pharmacological Properties:
Mint contains menthol and other essential oils with demonstrated antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic effects. It is also recognized for aiding digestion, freshening breath, and relieving mild headaches.

Preparation and Dosage:
Mint is usually added to herbal decoctions at the end of boiling to preserve its volatile oils. It can also be used in teas, tinctures, or extracts. Dosage should be adjusted based on individual conditions and supervised by a qualified practitioner.

Precautions:

  • Not recommended for individuals with Yin deficiency or excessive sweating.
