Dry-Fried Barley Sprout (Chao Mai Ya)
Pharmaceutical Name: Hordei Fructus Germinatus (dry-fried)
Common Name: Dry-Fried Malt / Barley Sprout
TCM Name:  Chao Mai Ya

Overview:
Chao Mai Ya, or dry-fried barley sprout, is the roasted germinated grain of barley (Hordeum vulgare). In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is primarily used to aid digestion, especially for starchy foods, regulate the stomach, and stop lactation when necessary. The roasting (or dry-frying) process enhances its ability to relieve food stagnation and tonify the middle burner (spleen and stomach).

Traditional Uses in TCM:

  1. Relieves Food Stagnation:
Commonly used for indigestion, bloating, and fullness, particularly from excessive intake of starchy foods like rice, bread, and noodles.

  2. Promotes Appetite and Supports the Spleen:
Used in formulas to stimulate digestion and appetite, especially after illness or in cases of weak spleen function.

  3. Stops Lactation:
In higher doses, dry-fried Mai Ya is used to reduce or stop lactation in women who have weaned their child.

  4. Assists in the Transition of Infants to Solid Foods:
Gentle and effective for improving digestive function in infants and children during weaning.

Pharmacological Properties:
Contains enzymes such as amylase and protease, which help break down starches and proteins, supporting digestive function. Modern research suggests potential benefits in regulating gastrointestinal motility and easing functional dyspepsia.

Preparation and Dosage:

  • Form: Typically used in decoction or as a powdered ingredient in herbal formulas.

  • Dosage: 6–15 grams per day depending on condition. For stopping lactation, higher doses up to 30 grams may be used (under professional supervision).

Precautions:

  • Use caution in nursing mothers if not intending to stop lactation.

  • Should be used under the guidance of a qualified practitioner, particularly in pediatric cases or when combined with other herbs.
