Overview:
Cuttlebone, known as Wu Zei Gu in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is the internal shell of the cuttlefish (Sepia esculenta or related species). It is a chalky, porous material composed mainly of calcium carbonate, and has been used in TCM for centuries to stop bleeding, reduce gastric acidity, and promote healing of ulcers and wounds.
Zoological Characteristics:
The cuttlefish is a marine mollusk related to squid and octopus. The cuttlebone is its lightweight, calcified internal shell, which helps regulate buoyancy. After being harvested, the cuttlebone is cleaned, dried, and ground into powder for medicinal use.
Traditional Uses in TCM:
Stops bleeding: Used internally to treat vomiting of blood, nosebleeds, uterine bleeding, and wounds.
Reduces stomach acid: Commonly used for gastric discomfort, acid reflux, epigastric pain, and stomach ulcers.
Promotes healing of ulcers and skin lesions: Applied topically or taken internally to help heal wounds, sores, and chronic ulcers.
Retains essence and prevents leakage: Sometimes used for seminal emission, vaginal discharge, or enuresis due to deficiency and leakage syndromes.
Pharmacological Properties:
Cuttlebone contains primarily calcium carbonate, along with magnesium, phosphorus, and trace minerals. Modern pharmacological studies have confirmed its antacid, astringent, hemostatic, and wound-healing effects. It may also aid in tissue regeneration and protect the gastric mucosa.
Preparation and Dosage:
Wu Zei Gu is typically calcined (heated) to enhance its hemostatic and acid-neutralizing properties, and then ground into fine powder. It can be used alone or as part of an herbal formula. Typical oral dosage ranges from 6–12 grams, depending on the condition. For external use, it is applied directly to the affected area in powder form.
Precautions:
Not recommended for long-term use in large doses due to high calcium content.
Use with caution in individuals with calcium metabolism disorders or kidney stones.
Consult a healthcare professional before use, especially for pregnant women or those taking antacids or calcium supplements.
