Ginkgo Seed (Ginkgo biloba), Bai Guo
Overview:
Ginkgo Seed, known as Bai Guo in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is the edible seed of the ancient Ginkgo biloba tree, often referred to as a “living fossil.” While Ginkgo leaves are widely known for their cognitive benefits, the seeds have been used in TCM for centuries to support lung health, stop coughing, reduce excessive discharge, and stabilize the lower burner (e.g., for urinary or reproductive system concerns).
Botanical Characteristics:
The Ginkgo tree is a large deciduous tree native to China, now cultivated worldwide. It is characterized by its fan-shaped leaves and distinctive yellow fruits. The seeds (nuts) inside the fruit are hard-shelled and pale, resembling pistachios, and are used medicinally after careful processing due to their mild toxicity if consumed raw or in excess.
Traditional Uses in TCM:
Stops cough and reduces phlegm: Used for chronic cough, asthma, and wheezing, especially when caused by lung deficiency with excess phlegm.
Stabilizes lower burner: Helpful in cases of frequent urination, leucorrhea (excess vaginal discharge), or nocturnal emission, especially when due to deficiency and lack of control.
Astringent and tonifying effects: Ginkgo seeds have mild astringent properties that help strengthen the body's retention of vital fluids.
Pharmacological Properties:
Ginkgo seeds contain compounds such as ginkgolic acids, flavonoids, and terpenoids, which may have antibacterial, antioxidant, and astringent effects. However, the seeds also contain 4′-O-methylpyridoxine (MPN), a neurotoxic compound, making proper preparation and moderation essential.
Preparation and Dosage:
Ginkgo seeds are typically roasted, boiled, or cooked in herbal formulas or traditional dishes (such as sweet soups or congee). The recommended dosage is usually 6–10 grams, and they should always be cooked before consumption. Raw seeds should never be eaten due to potential toxicity.
Precautions:
Toxic in large amounts: Overconsumption can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, convulsions, or in severe cases, neurotoxicity.
Not suitable for young children in excess, due to their sensitivity to ginkgo toxins.
Pregnant women should avoid using ginkgo seeds without medical supervision.
Only use under guidance of a qualified healthcare provider or TCM practitioner.
