Quisqualis Fruit (Fructus Quisqualis, Shi Jun Zi)

Overview:
Quisqualis Fruit, known as Shi Jun Zi in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is the dried mature fruit of Quisqualis indica, a climbing vine native to tropical Asia. This herb is traditionally used to expel intestinal parasites, especially in children, and to support digestive function. It is sweet and warm in nature and is prized for its effectiveness against roundworms and pinworms.

Botanical Characteristics:
Quisqualis indica is a woody vine that produces fragrant, reddish-pink flowers and small oblong fruits with a hard shell. The fruit is harvested when fully ripe, dried, and sometimes roasted to enhance its therapeutic properties. It is commonly used in whole or powdered form in herbal formulas.

Traditional Uses in TCM:

  1. Expels Parasites:
Primarily used to eliminate roundworms and pinworms, particularly in pediatric cases.

  2. Improves Digestion:
Helps relieve symptoms such as poor appetite, bloating, and abdominal discomfort caused by parasitic infestation or weak digestion.

  3. Mild Laxative Effect:
Facilitates gentle elimination, which aids in the expulsion of parasites.

Pharmacological Properties:
Quisqualis Fruit contains active compounds such as quisqualic acid, fatty oils, and tannins. These have demonstrated anthelmintic (anti-parasitic), anti-inflammatory, and digestive-supporting properties. Quisqualic acid, in particular, is responsible for its efficacy against intestinal worms.

Preparation and Dosage:

  • Oral dosage: 6–12 grams of the dried fruit, usually roasted and crushed before decoction or directly chewed.

  • Often used in combination with other herbs in TCM prescriptions to enhance antiparasitic effects.

Precautions:

  • Excessive use may cause hiccups or gastrointestinal discomfort due to the irritant properties of quisqualic acid.

  • Not recommended for individuals without parasitic infections.

  • Use with caution in young children; always follow professional guidance.
