Mugwort Leaf (Artemisia argyi) — Ai Ye

Overview:
Mugwort Leaf, known as Ai Ye in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is the dried leaf of Artemisia argyi, a plant native to East Asia. It is widely recognized for its role in moxibustion therapy, where it is burned near acupuncture points to stimulate circulation and dispel cold. In herbal medicine, it is valued for its ability to warm the meridians, stop bleeding, and alleviate pain caused by cold and dampness.

Traditional Uses in TCM:

  • Warms the uterus and stops bleeding: Commonly used for conditions such as cold-induced menstrual pain, irregular menstruation, and uterine bleeding.

  • Calms the fetus: Helps prevent threatened miscarriage due to cold or deficiency.

  • Disperses cold and relieves pain: Used for abdominal pain, joint pain, or lower back pain caused by cold-damp conditions.

  • External use in moxibustion: Burned as moxa wool to tonify Yang, strengthen immunity, and promote the flow of Qi and blood.

Pharmacological Properties:
Modern research has shown that Mugwort Leaf contains essential oils, flavonoids, and tannins, which provide anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, analgesic, and hemostatic effects. Its warming nature also makes it beneficial for enhancing circulation and alleviating stagnation.

Preparation and Dosage:
Ai Ye is typically used in decoctions, herbal baths, topical applications, and moxibustion. A common oral dosage is 3–9 grams in decoction. For moxibustion, it is processed into moxa sticks or cones.

Precautions:

  • Not suitable for individuals with yin deficiency heat, active bleeding from excess heat, or febrile disorders.

  • Use with caution during pregnancy unless prescribed by a licensed TCM practitioner.

  • Always consult a healthcare provider before combining with other herbs or therapies.

Other hemostatic herbs include: BelladonnaBletilla StriataSophorae FlosHairyvein Agrimonia. If you need other hemostatic herbs, please let us know.
