Snowbell-leaf Tickclover Herb (Guang Jin Qian Cao, Desmodium styracifolium)
Overview:
Guang Jin Qian Cao, also known as Snowbell-leaf Tickclover Herb, is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb derived from the dried aerial parts of Desmodium styracifolium. It is well-known for its powerful effects in clearing damp-heat, promoting urination, and eliminating urinary and biliary stones. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is frequently used for conditions such as urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and jaundice.
Botanical Characteristics:
Desmodium styracifolium is a perennial herb native to southern China and Southeast Asia. It features slender stems and soft leaves that resemble those of the snowbell tree, hence the name. The whole above-ground part of the plant is collected during summer or autumn, dried, and used medicinally.
Traditional Uses in TCM:
Clears damp-heat and promotes urination:
Used to relieve painful urination, burning sensation in the urinary tract, cloudy urine, and difficulty urinating.
Dissolves urinary and biliary stones:
A key herb for urinary stones, gallstones, and associated symptoms like flank pain and hematuria (blood in the urine).
Treats jaundice and liver heat:
Applied in the treatment of damp-heat jaundice, hepatitis, and liver fire.
Reduces swelling and detoxifies:
Used externally for insect bites, boils, and localized swelling.
Pharmacological Properties:
Modern pharmacology supports its diuretic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-urolithic effects. It helps inhibit the formation of calcium oxalate crystals and supports the body's natural elimination of urinary calculi.
Preparation and Dosage:
Commonly used in decoction, or made into herbal granules or teas.
Often combined with herbs like Hai Jin Sha, Ji Nei Jin, or Jin Qian Cao (Lysimachia) for stone-dissolving formulas.
Typical dosage: 15–30 grams (dried herb), or 30–60 grams if used fresh.
Precautions:
Use with caution in individuals with spleen and kidney deficiency, or those prone to frequent urination.
Not suitable for long-term or high-dose use without professional guidance.
Pregnant women should consult a licensed healthcare provider before use.
