Fu Zi (Aconite Root) – Processed Lateral Root of Aconitum carmichaelii

Overview:
Fu Zi is the processed lateral root of Aconitum carmichaelii, a potent and warming herb used extensively in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is famous for its ability to restore yang, revive vital functions, and dispel cold. Due to its high Natural toxicity, Fu Zi must be thoroughly processed before it is safe for medicinal use.

Botanical Description:
Aconitum carmichaelii is a perennial herb from the Ranunculaceae family, native to mountainous regions of China. The lateral roots (known as Fu Zi) are harvested in autumn and undergo a detoxifying process (commonly boiling with Ginger and licorice) to reduce their toxicity.

Traditional Uses in TCM:

  1. Restores Yang Collapse:
Used in emergency cases of cold extremities, weak pulse, fainting, or shock due to sudden yang collapse or severe deficiency.

  2. Warms the Interior and Expels Cold:
Treats cold-related conditions such as cold limbs, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or joint pain due to wind-cold-dampness.

  3. Supports Heart and Kidney Yang:
Commonly used for chronic conditions like fatigue, low back pain, edema, and cold intolerance caused by yang deficiency.

Pharmacological Properties:
Fu Zi contains alkaloids such as aconitine, mesaconitine, and hypaconitine, which have known cardiotonic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects. However, these compounds are highly toxic in their raw form. Proper processing and dosage control are critical to ensuring safety.

Preparation and Dosage:

  • Processing: Always used in its detoxified (prepared) form, never raw. Processing methods vary but typically involve boiling and drying.

  • Dosage: Usually 3–15 grams per day in decoction. Should be used as part of a formula and under professional supervision.

Safety Precautions:

  • Toxicity: Raw Fu Zi is highly toxic and can cause serious heart and nerve issues. Only processed Fu Zi should be used medicinally.

  • Contraindications: Not recommended during pregnancy or for people with yin deficiency and heat signs.

  • Supervision Required: Use only under the guidance of a trained TCM practitioner or healthcare provider.
