Chinese Gall (Galla Chinensis, Wu Bei Zi)

Overview:
Chinese Gall, known as Wu Bei Zi in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is a natural product formed on the leaves of certain Chinese sumac trees (Rhus chinensis or related species) after insect infestation. It is valued for its strong astringent properties, helping to stop bleeding, secure leakage of fluids, and reduce swelling and inflammation.

Botanical Characteristics:
Chinese Galls are irregularly shaped, hard structures produced when aphids (primarily Melaphis chinensis) stimulate the tree's tissues. These galls are harvested, dried, and used medicinally. They are rich in tannins, giving them their characteristic astringent effect.

Traditional Uses:

  • Stops Bleeding: Used for conditions such as coughing up blood, nosebleeds, and bleeding hemorrhoids.

  • Secures Leakage: Treats chronic diarrhea, excessive sweating, and seminal emission.

  • Reduces Swelling and Heals Sores: Applied externally for ulcers, skin sores, and swollen lesions.

Pharmacological Properties:
Chinese Gall contains high levels of tannins and gallic acid, which contribute to its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and hemostatic activities. It is also being studied for potential antioxidant and anticancer properties.

Preparation and Dosage:
Wu Bei Zi is typically ground into powder for external application or decocted for internal use. It is often included in herbal formulas rather than used alone. Dosage should be determined by a healthcare practitioner based on individual needs.

Precautions:

  • Long-term use or overdose may impair digestion due to its strong astringency.

  • Not recommended for individuals with constipation or significant internal heat.

  • Pregnant women should use it cautiously under professional supervision.
